5 out of 5 stars Best Tool for Cutting Hardiboard   August 6, 2006

I do a lot of bathroom and kitchen remodels, and many times, that calls for tile work. Several years ago, I needed something better than a saw to cut 1/2" Hardibacker board, because of all the cement dust they kick up. I bought one of these directly from Pacific Tool when the local lumber/hardware supplier only carried the S404 Snapper Shear. Loved it from the first time I used it, and it went through a lot of remodels before the motor burned out a couple of months ago. I called Pacific Tool directly, and they confirmed my suspicions about the motor, and they were able to 2nd day a new one to me.This tool cuts backer board like a hot knife through butter, going through five feet of 1/2" Hardiboard in less than a 30 seconds. It does accurate inside corners, and with a little practice and finesse, you can do trim cuts quickly, and neatly, such as when the cut board is just a bit on the tight side.

I'm a tile setter and I should have bought this tool a long time ago. No dust, quiet, and fast. You can trim small edges too. MUCH better than using your circular saw to cut Hardibacker!

5 out of 5 stars Shear ecstasy   September 21, 2008

I am a tile contractor and have been using more and more backer board as time goes by and the old school method of floating fades away. I have been wanting to get a shearer but was put of by the price. On my present job I am using many sheets of backer board, both 1/4" and 1/2". The speed this tool powers through the sheets and the elimination of dust lets me know it will pay for itself in a short time and makes for a much heathier work environment. If you are thinking of getting one of these, stop thinking and do it

5 out of 5 stars Should Be Tool of the Year   October 23, 2009

I'm a 125 lb. female real estate investor who likes to do all the work myself. The scoring method for cutting cement board is difficult - for anyone. I was looking for a better way. I read all the reviews before purchasing the SS424. Frankly a little skeptical I bought it anyway. What an AWESOME tool. The tool paid for itself on the first job in time saved. The tool designer made the cutting mechanisms on the front reversible two ways for four times the cutting life. I work alone so I just clamp the cement board to sawhorses and let the tool do the work. To quote another reviewer - it cuts through cement board like a "hot knife through butter." It's true. It cuts away about 3/16" of material that turns into small pebble-like pieces that can then be swept up after the cutting is done. No harmful dust is created during cutting. A must have for tile setters!

If you've ever cut HardiBacker with any other method, you will appreciate the speed and accuracy that this tool provides--not to mention the virtually dust-free operation. This shear allows you to make cuts as fast as a circular saw in 1/4" and 1/2" backer board but without the mess. You can also use it to trim even 1/8" of material off a piece that is too large, making it ideal for custom fitting irregular shapes.

The only criticism I can levy is that I wish the cutting head was 90 degrees to the board--as it is on their cordless model. As it is, the power cord has a tendency to get caught in the kerf of the cut. The flatter you hold the tool to the blades, the cleaner the cut; unfortunately, doing this tends to press the power cord against the board and drag the cord into the kerf. Small nit, but fixing this would make an otherwise excellent tool perfect.
